As you may already know, cannabis comes with various traits, effects, and qualities. Not all cannabis has every single trait or effect, however, and some qualities are better than others. To tell the difference between which is which, and to single in what you may desire, cannabis is separated into different strains.
These strains are unique from each other, and their names often relate to a certain cosmetic or psychoactive trait. Some strains, however, seem to almost have gotten completely random names. While there are some stories behind these names, some names will have you wondering how the heck anyone ever thought of that.
For this post, we’ve decided to gather a list of some strains with crazy names and a story of how that name came about. Some of them are just odd (you’ve been warned). On a side note, some of these names may seem offensive to sensitive viewers. No offense is ever intended, as we did not name these strains ourselves. Sit back, read some crazy strain names, have a laugh, and learn a little something.
Funniest and Craziest Named Cannabis Strains
Alaskan Thunder F*ck
First, on our list, we have Alaskan Thunder F*ck (yes, you read that right). This strain is known to be one of the best Sativa strains out there, even making our list of the “Top 10 Best Sativa Strains“. ATF (this strain’s abbreviation) was created in, of course, Alaska. But where did Thunder F*ck come from? While the strain’s creators most likely added it to create a unique and catchy name, some relate Thunder F*ck to the strong and heavy high that is correlated with this strain’s effects.
Crouching Tiger Hidden Alien
What do you think about this one? CTA (for short) is an Indica strain created by Exotic Genetix. It is a cross between the strains Tiger’s Milk and Starfighter. Those strains not only gave CTA its traits and effects but also helped create its name. Crouching Tiger came from Tiger’s Milk, while Hidden Alien most likely came from Starfighter (starfighters typically refer to spaceships). CTA has the longest name on this list, yet it is not one of the most popular strains out there. Still, it is a good Indica strain if you are looking for one.
Afgooey
Here’s another indica strain for you: Afgooey. It most likely originated in or around Afghanistan, where many popular Indica strains hail from. Its parent strains are Maui Haze and an Afghani Indica. Now, Maui Haze is a Sativa strain, meaning Afgooey has some Sativa in it. While the indica effects do overpower the Sativa effects, you can still feel the balance. The flavors of these strains are known to be sweet and sour, which also contributes to Afgooey’s name.
Purple Monkey Balls
Admit it, this name made you laugh a little bit. If your friend asked “want to go smoke some Purple Monkey Balls,” would you do it? I mean, it is only cannabis. PMB (for short) is yet another Indica strain. The exact origins of this strain are unknown, however. Some say that it has some Mendos Purple in it, and others claim it has some Grandaddy Purple. What we do know is that it comes from Northern California, and is a purple strain. Another thing we know is that it has one of the funniest names for a cannabis strain.
Bob Saget OG
Ever heard of Bob Saget? Well, he is a famous actor and television host who has been in many popular shows and movies. Some of his best shows are Full House and America’s Funniest Home Videos (AFV). Oh, and he is also a comedian. In most of his roles, he leaves the audience full of laughter. So there’s no wonder why he has a strain that can give you the giggles named after him! As for the strain, it is a Sativa strain with Pre-98 Bubba Kush and Afghani strains as its parents. If you’re going to smoke some Bob Saget OG, I suggest enjoying some of Bob Saget’s hilarious television roles to it.
Obama Kush
Here’s another one named after somebody. Surely you’ve heard of Barack Obama, right? If not, well he was the 44th president of the United States. Many stoners actually favored him during his presidency, and he even made it to some memes, such as this one that he stars in:

This strain will leave you with some Obama Care, maybe not the one you’re thinking about. The one we’re talking about is the psychoactive indica care that this strain offers. In addition, many medical marijuana patients actually prefer to use this strain for a number of reasons, including stress, pain, depression, and insomnia. If you’re a recreational user, then you can enjoy the relaxing indica effects as you feel uplifted and slowly drift away (a.k.a. fall asleep).
Zombie Killer OG
Who doesn’t like a good zombie apocalypse? Now, I don’t mean actually living through one (screw that), I mean a good zombie movie or t.v. show. There are many out there, and even video games you can play and kill zombies in! Smoking some Zombie Killer OG might not make you a better zombie hunter, but it might make you want to sit down and enjoy some zombie clips/games. Or, enjoy it with some other late-night activity. No matter what, any cannabis and undead lover should definitely try out some Zombie Killer OG.
Green Crack
If you think we need more Sativa strains on this list, then look no further. Green Crack is one of the most popular Sativa strains out there, and that’s for a reason. This strain is very potent and is not recommended for new stoners. However, if you are looking to kick back and enjoy a strong high, then this is your go-to. No need to worry, however, this strain does not have any real crack cocaine in it. As with all of the other strains, it’s only a name. Green Crack was actually named by the rapper Snoop Dogg when he felt its super strong effects that somehow reminded him of crack.

Poochie Love
If you love cannabis, you may fall in love with Poochie Love. This Sativa strain comes from strains of interesting names themselves. PLV’s (for short) parent strains are Dog Shit and Face Off OG. Those strains alone probably could have made this list. Dog Shit got its name from, well, its not-the-best smell. Luckily, PLV did not come out smelling like that. It actually has a more earthy and herbal smell. As for how PLV got its name, however, that is not entirely known. Maybe it got it from The Simpsons when Homer played the voice of Poochie on “The Itchy and Scratchy Show”? Okay, that was most likely not the reason, but it’s a better reason than nothing.
White Girl OG
Last, but not least, we have White Girl OG. This one is a hybrid strain, and delivers an excellent balance of effects. Its parent strains are Berry White and Girl Scout Cookies. This strain is also quite potent and is good for those who don’t know if they want to smoke an indica or a Sativa. With this one, you get the best of both worlds! As for the name, there is funny reasoning behind that. This strain is said to leave you feeling better after smoking it than you would after talking to some crazy, mean white girl.
So, which strain was your favorite to learn about? Personally, I think Purple Monkey Balls has the craziest and funniest name of them all. What about you?
