Stoners love their stoner accessories. One thing essential to most stoners is a grinder. Sure, you could go out and buy a cheap grinder that simply gets the job done. Or, you could upgrade to a better-performing grinder that lasts forever. In the post, I would like to introduce you to a 4-piece grinder.

4-piece grinders are a step up from a normal, basic grinder. Its design and added functions allow it to do even more than a simple grinder. Sure, if you hardly grind up weed or hardly smoke at all, a fancy grinder may not be ideal for you. However, I believe one is handy to own because you never know when your smoking buddy will come through with some bud.
The 4 Piece Grinder Review
So let’s discuss the “4-piece” part of these grinders. What does that even mean? Well, it means the grinder can be separated into four parts. Each part has a different function. As the cannabis moves through the grinder, it passes through different pieces until it reaches the bottom. That is, only the smallest bits make it to the bottom.
Specification:
First Piece – The Cap
The first, top piece of a 4-piece grinder serves as the cap. It also serves as the piece that you twist when grinding up your buds. Unlike every other piece, the cap does not screw on, it only slides on to cover the second piece.
Second Piece – The Teeth
Below the cap is where the grinder’s “teeth” are. My teeth, I mean the small metal spikes that do the grinding. Cannabis is placed in between the teeth before grinding. Then, the cap is placed on top and twisted around to properly grind up the buds. After that, your weed falls through to the third piece.

Third Piece – The Screen
Once you begin twisting the cap to grind your weed, small bits will begin to fall through holes in the second piece down to the third. In this part, the grinded-up cannabis has made its way to the screen. The bottom of this piece is a screen. Of course, no grinder is perfect, so you may need to dig out some remaining weed out from the second piece. However, the majority will find its way to the screen. Also, the third piece is typically the largest, allowing you to possibly store some buds in there.
Fourth Piece – The Catcher
Last, but not least, we have the final piece. You may be wondering: “What is the screen for in the third piece?” Well, it comes into play with the fourth piece. As your buds are ground up, tiny bits will fall through the screen, into the catcher. These tiny bits are known as kief and are about the size of a grain of sand. Grinding up weed with your hands makes it nearly impossible to collect kief, but a 4-piece grinder makes it pretty easy.
Let’s walk through each step. So first, you remove the cap and place your buds in between the teeth on the second piece. Replace the cap, then twist it to begin grinding. As the buds are ground up, they will fall through small holes and into the third piece. Kief from the buds will sprinkle through a screen on the third piece and end up at the bottom of your grinder. That’s it! Here’s a visual of each piece:
Compared To Simple Grinders
What do we mean by simple grinders? A simple grinder is a 2-piece grinder, meaning a grinder that only contains the top two pieces. This allows it to still grind up weed but without the bottom two pieces. Where will your kief go? Where will you store a small amount of weed? Nowhere with a simple grinder.
Simple grinders are typically cheaper. They are also typically made out of plastic, while 4-piece grinders are made of metal (meaning better durability). If you are simply looking for a grinder too, well, only grind your weed, then seek out something simple. However, the 4-piece grinders allow for storage and catching kief, which we’ll discuss briefly below.
Kief Catcher
Kief catchers are great because they allow you to collect kief without really doing anything. Think about it, you still grind and use the buds as you would with a simple grinder or even from grinding with your hands. But the addition of a Kief catcher lets you store up on Kief, without even noticing it.
Here are some tips on collecting kief. First off, understand that it may take weeks to months before you have a significant amount of kief. If you were to grind up 1-5 grams of cannabis a day (on average), it would take at least 1-2 months before you could effectively use your kief. This long wait time makes many stoners believe it is not worth it. However, with very little to no effort required, I think it is very much worth it to automatically collect kief.
What is Kief exactly? Kief is small grain-sized particles that naturally form on cannabis. They are highly potent due to the high levels of cannabinoid concentration in them. One gram of kief is much, much more potent than one gram of cannabis. Many users prefer to sprinkle some kief on top of a bowl, inside a blunt/joint, or even save enough to smoke a whole kief bowl!
Final Thoughts
Overall, Reefer Post gives 4-piece grinders an excellent review. Compared to simple grinders, they are an upgrade that allows for more functionality. Save your kief, store some buds, and have a cool grinder to show off to your smoking buddies. If you are going to get a 4-piece grinder, I recommend purchasing one made of alloy, as the durability and efficiency of these are superb compared to plastic counterparts.
